If you want to try to save it, try soaking in a safe for aluminum radiator flush followed by scrubbing. At least you'll get a good idea of what kinda shape it's in. My system is in pretty good shape but the E28 t stat cover was kind of rough. It's important for the gasket to seal well (see water pump post below) so I planed the housing on a flat surface with wet or dry 220-600.
Made a very nice sealing surface.
Some sort of media blast on the outside and you're set.
I bet new they are not cheap but should be on a million parts cars.
