How much space is there for an a/c evaporator?

Just how much space is there under the e12 dash for an evaporator.I am about to buy a universal unit for my new a/c system.
Anyone out there working behind their dashboards that could give me the dimensions for the space for the evaporator, or the dimensions of the evaporator itself?
