My 1980 528i runs and shuts off within minutes after start-up. The fuel pump sometimes does not run while cranking the ignition. It usually works when I run a direct hook up to the battery. Sometimes I reverse the polarity assuming that it may blast any debris from the system back to the tank. I've changed the fuel filter thinking that it might have been clogged thus starving the system. I've been told that the pump can run hot and fail. I've noticed lately that I must crank almost twice as long before the engine could start. Do you think that its time for a new pump, or is it possible that the pump is being clogged with debris? Any help will be deeply appreciated. Still love my car.
