From memory, the charge output from the alternator is run to the terminal on the starter. From there, another ring terminal and cable to the battery. If the connection at the starter was suspect, that could very easily cause your symptom. In fact, the retrofit/upgrade is high up on my list of recommendations. Using 8ga wire (about $1/ft at any car audio shop and 2 ring terminal $.50 each, some shrink tube and you're all set. Shouldn't take any longer than 10 minutes. I recommend flowing solder into the ring terminals instead of crimping. OEMs do both. But that's hard without production grade tools to do a perfect crimp.
