First verify the color of the smoke. White = coolant. Black = rich fuel. Blue = oil. My experience with smoking from coolant is that it happens after things warm up. Coolant pressure when hot, helps the coolant "find" the combustion chamber. If you use antifreeze and thats what the smoke is, the smoke will smell sweet. No you can not see a cracked head or blown head gasket when you open the hood. You don't mention what year car, how many miles, or if you know when the last valve job was done. If the smoke at start-up is from burning oil then valve guides/seals are the prime suspects. I am not sure what the new muffler would have to do with anything, but if it truly started smoking after it was replaced remove the hose between the AFM and throttle body and check for oil accumulation.
