Welcome back.
I found that a candy thermometer will give an accurate coolant temperature reading. They cost about $3.00 if you don't have one. Just insert it in the plastic expansion tank with the cap off, while the engine is running.
-Caution- The time to start to do this is when the engine is cold. The filler cap should not be removed when the engine is hot. Once it is off there's no problem.
