It seems counterintuitive that there is a loss of volume. Those gasses are several hundred degrees hotter that what went in. Not arguing, just trying to understand.
About the stainless steel: that's a good point. The stock 528i resonator is stainless, but the stock rear muffler is not. The original one fell apart in '84. Then I put a Supersprint on there which is still in service today on someone else's car. I guess I'll have to track down a stainless resonator for it. Unfortunately, I think the likelyhood of find SS parts for an early E24 is pretty low.
