You should pop the hood on that baby and have a look. Some of the 520 cars had a 4-cylinder engine (M10) and some had a 6-cylinder engine (M20). The latter were know as the 520/6.
You really couldn't do much to hotrod the 4-cylinder car, but there's a lot you could do if it's a 6-cylinder car. Those cars weigh considerably less than ours because they have less stuff on them. A '84-'91 325i motor would fit, no questions asked, and because the car is so light, it would run pretty good.
