tail light question

Hi all,

Can anyone tell me what the empty spot on our tail lights is meant for. I noticed that the tail lights on the 528i had a spare spot that isn't wired for a bulb. I haven't looked at the 530i yet, but I'm assuming it's the same.

Was this a a euro rear fog light use or something?
