The early 4 pot 520i (Kugelfischer) system is timed via a belt off the crank. The turbo setup has an altitude compensator which the tii setup didn't have. If you can pull all the parts together then the conversion shouldn't be too tough.
I have used the services of www.jaymic.com for '02 parts and (occasionally) questions.
I had a '73 E12 520i and it was a terrific car - remarkably fast given the additional weight over and above the tii. Nice handling too - not too hard.
