Ok. My 528i is my baby, and at 250k MILES on the dial
with never an engine rebuild, im pretty happy that it
pulls a strong as it does! Infact, the thing runs
damn near perfectly. Other stuff is breaking all around
it, but the engine is happy to leak/burn oil and run
hard.
However, i've had some lifter noise since i've owned
the car, and i've never done the valves. The reason ?
I don't know how. This is my _only_ car and its
required to be able to pull long trips and such. I dont
exactly want to pay $600 for an inspection II or
any nonsense like that. But I _would_ like to adjust
my valves and make sure they're doing the right thing.
I feel like the engine could probably be running even
better and even stronger.
So what I am asking is for someone to put up some website
or point me to some site that explains very very plainly
how to do your valves. The tools required, the time
required, the shortfalls of using a given brand of tool,
where to buy them-- you name it. I've played with
about every system on the car now and I finally think
that I want to start getting inside the engine a little.
I've ahd the valve train cover off before (i replaced
the cover gasket) but thats the extent that i've opened
up the engine. I know that sometime in the future
I need to replace my fan clutch and my upper timing
cover gasket (oil leaks from the front of the engine
in a big way after the car has been run particuarly
hard).
Does such a site like this exist ? I know most of you
people are doing your own valve jobs and all sorts of other
things to your engines that I as of yet have no clue
how to do, but would certainly love to learn.
Thanks as always for all of your invaluable help,
Matt
