No, these attatch to door frame. On e12's the seal to the door (at least on mine) are felt. On e28's they use a hollow gasket.
My original ('80 528i) door seals are all rubber, no felt. I'm a little confused as to the E28 seal (w/cloth) you're describing. I see door seals offered from Bav. Auto (~$60 a door; front only) and am trying to decide what to do.

For the door itself, use the factory gasket.
Also check to see if water isn't in fact running in from inside the door like mine was.
