From what I've gathered, tou can use an automatic driveshaft when you stick in the 5-speed. (NOTE this is for Bavarias... I'm not sure about the lengths on an e12) From what I know of Bavarias, the length of the Auto Driveshaft is just a little short, and can be compensated for, if you have a tight budget. In any case, there are excellent writeups in the archives section on a 4 to 5 conversion. FWIW I also want to convert MY 4 to a 5 because of the obvious long haul advantages. If I had the cash, I'd convert over to a 5-speed from an auto anyday!
: How hard is it to convert an Automatic to a manual. I know you would have to add a peddle, and change the break peddle. But what else? Is it even worht it. I kinda like having the auto, power when you need it, but you can just cruise if you want to. But I sometimes miss the excitment of a stick. What do you people think?
