Not to speak for Tim, but I don't think the oil hurts gaskets. Just most synthetics leak more quickly through old tired gaskets due to wider viscosity range (which is a good thing normally). If you don't leak any oil now, you probably still won't. I just leak less with Castrol GTX 20-50 than synthetics. I know it's not as good an oil though.
