Those comments by Bob Bodurant were concerning an Alpina version of the e21 320i , but the comments apply to all BMWs up to the e28. At that point BMW decided to reduce roll. That's sad because it was always a point of difference with Mercedes which always belived in zero body roll.
From the e28 five series on (1981/2)BMW brought out the double pivot front end which allowed ABS brakes to be used.
A 3.5 e12 is a good outright perf match for a warm mid 80s Mustang 5.0 GT. That said the stock e12 brakes / suspension are a whole league ahead of new Australian market V8 Fords and GM Holdens.
With the e12 you get sport and refinement , the others can't give you that , not even Daimler Benz!
