This board is replete with stories of how intact E12s are when knocked about. Look for the post a couple of weeks ago and pics of the E12 that probably saved a life because of it's integrity.
I have had my own experiences. Front end collision, driver side offset, front wheel into cabin almost.... body intact and all doors open and closed perfectly.
Friend on Interstate with son, when a semi changed lanes in the rain, squeezed him up and on top of the concrete rail for about a 100 yard, then car dropped down between truck and rail, with roof against truck for another 50 yards. Cabin intact and only bruises to show.
None Safer I suspect, if you must go out on the highways and byways.
PS, my 82 e28 got hammered from the rear, while it was parked, by a drunk driver. Result... car shorter by a good foot on the driver side rear. All glass good and all 4 doors open and close. Driver side passenger door a bit tight.
