Here is what I would (and I wish I had taken my own advice).

Get a low mileage late M30 3.4L with 209hp, spend the money and buy a Schrick cam/spring setup, free flow exhaust, and chip. This should be an easy 245 to 250hp. Take the time and install the engine with the newer Motronics and you will see your MPG at 22 in town and 29 on the open road, it will start on the first crank hot or cold and you will be saving the environment (very clean exhaust).

I have this setup (but an earlier 3.4L with euro 10 to 1 pistons) and can easily out run my friends 88 911 Carrera that has a fresh motor. In fact with my 195/70 14 snow tires I can light up the rears going into 2nd at sub 3K rpm, great torque.

Do not waste your money on an early euro 3.5L (unless it is dirt cheap). Get the long stroke truck motor and put a cam in it.
