I also have a 76 530i. Not only did I have the thermal reactor, I also had the cracked cylinder head that accompanies most of the dreaded reactors. I removed the reactor et al. and replaced the system with Bavaria exhaust manifold and down pipe, which I purchase from Maximillian in Maryland. Also, and I almost forgot had to get a new upgraded head etc. By the time I was done I had spent $3000 (I don't mean to scare you, I had all kind of new parts installed while everything was apart - including rebuilding the fuel injection etc) I got around Pennsylvania emissions by getting a Classic plate (no longer have to get an emissions test.) otherwise, this wouldn't have been legal. I still think I would have tried to find a way to circumvent the system. I have no clue what this stuff looked like because my mechanic did the work. I do know that the car was about 75 pounds lighter when the job was done.
