I use castrol syntec full synthetic oil in my 81 e12. I have an 3.3L with about 52k miles. The difference for me was night and day. The car is stronger, with an noticable difference in my exhaust tone. I also must add that I purchased this motor from an former member of our group. The motor had 45K when it was installed, and said to be an factory rebuild, from an 633csi. It has an 79 block with an 84 head. Also slightly higher comp. ratio that could explain the exhaust note
