Never had the situation myself, but I've read here the emergency flasher going on the fritz goofs up the turn signals. Maybe use the new search engine to investigate. Some have taken the flasher apart and fixed the detent...
If you have to take the flasher out, just know there are two( kind of arrowhead) clips at 6 and 12 o'clock, that you have to compress / wiggle to get through the hole in the dash. You have to drop the kick panel to get your hand up behind; using a screwdriver on the front plate won't work.
