I have only ever owned BMWs, all 5 Series, two E12s and three E34s, and think they are great cars. None of them have been really unreliable or overly costly to run. The key when buying an older BMW is to find a well looked after car in good condition with at least some history. Plus, you can tell a lot about the owner by looking at the cars' trim. Finding the right condition car has always been my aim, and I have always had good solid service from these cars. Proof lies with my current E34, which I bought as a bit of a shed and fixed up, and is still giving me more hassles then both my previous two which were pristine and of the same age.
A older good condition BMW will give you years of fairly trouble free motoring, and it won't necessarily break your bank. I love BMWs, but must admit I also like some of your American cars, like the Corvette, the Cobra, and sixties and seventies 'Stangs and Camaros. Don't think much of the new stuff though, except the 'Vette.
