At least, this is what happened on my car.(1981 528i) Follow T.Hans directions on how to get the switch out, (drop kick panel, push outward from behind) unclip it from the car, that will make the turn signals stop flashing, also keep them from working. Now, if you look on the back part of the switch, you'll see that the front is held onto the back with a number of small plastic clips. You have to press them all in and pull the switch apart. A lot of stuff will go flying, so try and take it apart slowly. There is a small metal bar with a needle that is attached to the actual button. When you depress the button, the needle follows a track that completes or breaks the circuit for the hazard lights. My needle had bent outward, and needed to bent downward so that it followed the track, test it a few times to make sure it follows the track once you bend it back. Then put it all together.
