Sounds like previous owner replaced the thermal reactor.
First step is to figure out what you have on your car now.
If the manifold is two sets of three, with dual down pipes, the previous owner may have already back dated to the Bavaria manifold.
That was a popular upgrade when these cars were new. It might also be a newer manifold, like an E28 533i/535i. E24 635i and E23
735i manifold, back to the cat, will also drop right in.
Single down pipe would indicate a 528i manifold.
