When I replaced my rear struts I had to use the spring plates that were on the old set. I took these off using a hammer and carefully placed them on the new set. Key here is that the struts need to have a metal lip somewhat in the center of the unit which is used as the purchase for the plate. Note: this was for a 1975 530I and I am not sure if there was a large change between 75 and 76.
