Robert, if you really want a turn-key car and don't want to work on a restoration yourself, I might suggest you contact someone who specializes in finding older BMW's. As someone mentioned, there is a guy in Indy, Greymarkets Jurgen who specializes in getting parts and whole cars from Europe. Also, there is Don Dethlefson here in Chicago who specializes in older BMW restorations and finding cars for people. You might contact him and see if he knows of any cars out there.
In my opinion, if you're really willing to spend the cash, you might want to consider the option of importing a car from Europe. There you might find the Alpina or Hartge or M535i of your dreams. The E12's probably don't hold their value over there as well because its so expensive to keep and register older cars for highway use. Its sad. I've emailed Ulriche from e12.de about this and he said there are hardly any E12's on the road anymore over there. A bargain car plus the $10K to import it into the US, might get you what you want.
I don't think people on the board are "judging you" about showing interest in that car in GA. But I too salivated over it and it has been the topic of much conversation on the board. A guy posted about it maybe 9 months ago and I emailed him offline. He actually had alot of interest in the car but passed because of a laundry list of things that he didn't consider to be "right" about the car, especially in light of the $16K asking price.
