The e12 uses a rod with metal bracket, much like the 2002, it may even be the same. Part number 61 21 1 353 680 but I bet the number has subed. They are available new and if memory serves 10-20 bucks. The unit bolts into a small nut welded to the bottom of the battery tray. I had to make a patch for my tray but that was easly welded in. I would not recomend not having a hold down as batteries can jump around when you hit a bump, it does not mater how well wedged it is. If the battery hits the hood it can weld the hood shut. This will also short out other electrical components.
