I have owned an E12 (530i) and an E28 (528E) and I can give these observations.
The E28 is quite a bit more quiet and comfortable and civil. The ride seems a bit more controlled and the steering has more feel (I prefer it) and more of a distinct "dead center" feel.
The 533i is faster than the 528E, so I think acceleration and braking are pretty similar between the 528i and 533i. The older 528i is a lot easier (for me) to work on and is generally funner to tinker with. The 528i has a nice unique style, the 533i will probably get better mileage.
