In short, BMW solved all of the shortcomings of the E12 with the E28 and created some new ones as well.
Engine - The extra 500cc makes a huge difference in power. Better yet the engine loves to rev up unlike the 535. The Motronic works way better than L-Jet especially on idle. The ignition is better because it is computer mapped to the engine.
Suspension - BMW completely redesigned the front and rear suspensions. The 533i has a much softer ride yet feels very competent while corning. At speed the 533 feels like it sets down 1/2" to the road and feels very solid. The front end is more susceptible to shimmy under braking.
Brakes - BMW went to large single piston calipers to facilitate ABS (std in 85). They boost is powered by the power steering system to 700psi +/- with a prssure vessel called the bomb. $700 + to replace. I am sure to be blasted, but the brakes work just as well as an E12. Slotted and drilled disks are available for the E28.
Noise - The 533i is way quieter.
HVAC - The entire heating ventilating AC system works way better. The heater valve is mounted in the engine bay for ease of access.
Idiot Proofed - THe E28 has 10 times as many warning lights as the E12. Hopefully the village idiot at Munich did not wire your car.
Wire - E28 has a lot of it.
Instruments - Are all electronic. They have some internal batteries that will need replacement.
On Board Computer - Comes std with a neat computer on the dash. If you absolutely need to know your mpg for the past 3 months it is essential.
Our 533i has 205k on it and still runs great !
Major failures so far include:
Brake bomb - PO
All new rubber vacuum hoses & bellows
Water pump is going out
Shift console bolts fell out from PO clutch job. Put in new guibo, center bearing.
Leaks oil.
Leaks power sterring/power brake fluid.
Driveline noise (Can't figure out source yet)
Extreme radio-brake light syndrome. Shuts down instruments and OBC as well.
We are seeing more 533 and 535 hitting the boneyards lately in the bay area. So the once extravagant price gouging on parts is no longer.
Great car.
