I had a similar problem with my 1981 528i. It has 192,000 miles on it and I drive 120 mi a day. It smoked a little on start up and full throttle. I payed very little attention to that, untill # 5 and #6 cylinders lost compression while getting onto a freeway. After the valve job, it runs great and only burns 1qt/1000mi before it used to be 1qt/300mi it also runs a lot cooler.
