I believe your thinking on this point is reasonable. I suspect that all the flexing over the years "work-hardens" the springs. In the late 50's and early 60's we used to drop the fronts of our cars one of three ways, cut a coil out, J clamps, or mid spring coil clamps. In all cases, when you took a loop out of the coil, in a very short order, the spring would settle even more (increasing the drop) and the ride would get harsher. One of my cars was dropped to the legal limit, and within 6 months, I was over 1 inch beyond legal. The car looked great, though.

So, I presume that the same process goes on with the stock spring, at a much slower rate, of course. Might be worth checking out with those people who wind custom springs????
