I think the hardening with age theory has merit. However , 1975 & 1976 530is do have softer suspension. Form 1977 onwards the ride was firmed up.
I think the ride in my 1976 e12 is better ( comfort wise ) than a 5 year old Audi A6 I am familiar with. BTW perhaps the seating in your e12 could use some re-padding?
