$1500 is too much! Look around for your local pull your own parts yard. Watch your local tow yards if you must have a complete car. And you can usually get a whole dead car from a private owner if you offer to haul it away plus $100.

For example, my differential and 3.5 block came from the local parts yard for $210. The 5 speed from a dead e28, I hauled the whole car off + $100 to the owner. I bought a nice, non running e23 from the local tow yard (5 weeks ago) for $400, they paid for new title, I paid another $45 for them to drop it at my house.

Go slow. Keep watch.

BMW parts are slow to move on ebay (other than drivetrain, bilsteins, performance parts).
