From what I've heard the E28 suspension is a little less reliable than E12. So used E28 may need thrust bushings and assorted rear parts. E12's suspensions seem to run forever.
E12 bodies are a LOT less corrosion resistant. Need to check carefully before purchase.
Also early e28's had a lot of brake booster problems; I think later ones are ok.
IMO, get a clean e12, stuff 3.5L in it and go!
Put a decent sized sway bar on it as well.
