The '89-'93 M30 (535/635/735) is really the way to go. 209 bhp and lots of torque. Use the 320i intake runners and a free flowing exhaust.

I have one in my car, but it has the full Motronic injection system on it. Karl K. has one in his with the stock L-jet.
