unhooked the negative battery cable and clipped the test light to it - then touched the probe to the newly naked negative battery post. the light went on, indicating that power was a'flowin'. then pulled fuses until i found the one that turned off the light.
this doesn't solve the problem, of course - once you figure out where the drain is you still have to find out why... in my case, the trunk latch was sticking, leaving the light on.
