: My 1980 has been chewing through exhaust donuts like they are . . . well, donuts. I've had the car five years and never even looked at them, but this year I have had to replace them three times. I also find it difficult to believe that the exhaust is supported only at the rear muffler. Have I lost a center support?
Yeap!! Looks like you're missing the bracket on the tranny. I was too for a long time until I came across one at an "previously owned automobile recycling warehouse".
Haynes shows a picture of this. Sorry I don't have a scanner or digital camera. It goes bolted at the rear cover of the tranny and is a brace like that hugs the exhaust at that point providing enough support to prevent from bouncing. The one I found a the junkyard, was for a dual pipe one, since I have single pipe I modify it with a hacksaw.
Here's the deal: while I'm still in the middle of my 5 speed conversion (I should have finsihed by now, but I haven't bought a new guibo)and the exhaust is off, I could lend it to someone willing to reproduce it. Don't seem difficult for one with torch and/or welding skills and access to sheet metal. Compromise will be to make a few for those willing to pay of course.
Let me know.
