Guil,
I would attempt to flush the Heater core, it could be possible that it would be full of excess sludge this would decrease the effectiveness and it's a cheap test. I would then check to see that the heater controls are actuall opening up the proper "flaps". If for some reason they are switching open when you adjust to the heat setting no air can be transfered. I would also notice the temprature gage. If it is not raising off the first mark the car is not getting warm enough to produce heat. You may also try lowering the blower speed. I know it doesn't help curb the chill but if the air moves slower across the heater core it heats more.
As for the crack in the expansion tank, you should worry about this for a reason different than the heater, the system should pressurize. If the expansion tank is not sealed the entire cooling system will suffer.
Replace the coolant expansion tank. THey are cheap enough, Luis may have one. and Flush and fill the entire system and please replace the coolant tank cap. the rubber seal on it can cause pressure leaks. If all else fails, bundle up and I feel your pain.
: I have a 75 e12 with a cracked heater tank. The car does not heat well at all. Would the crack in the tank cause the system not to fully bleed and fill the heater core portion resulting in squat for heat coming out? Are the heating systems noted for being lacking(doubt this, but I'm in New Hampshire and freezing my ass off wondering) Thank you for your advice, Happy Holidays!
