Bear in mind that original specifications are based on different fuel than the current types. Even the 1977 California model still had the larger gas filler tube for leaded gas. Mine seems to run nicely on 87 octane without any pinging or knocking whatsoever. Of course, the Central Valley is about as flat as a pool table.
