I generally do the following depending on the particular engine and whether it is in or out of the car.
1) Screw some pressure plate bolts into the flywheel then either;
a)Get a sears craftsman (see sidebar below) big mutha screwdriver/prybar and thread it between two bolts and the underside of the car.
b)Hook a chain to the flyweel bolts and one or more transmission mounting holes on the block.
Sidebar: I put the end of a floorjack handle on a 1/4" sears ratchet (long story as to why I "needed" to do such a foolish thing, I was pretty tired). Guess where I'm going tomorrow?
