It seems Volvo figured out what to do about the fan shroud. It hurts airflow through the radiator in high speed driving, but at low speed it is needed for proper fan operation.
So in my wife's 940 turbo, Volvo offset the fan to one side leaving a large blank space on the other. They cut holes in the blank space and put rubber flappers over them. At low speed they stay shut allowing the fan / shroud combo to work , but at high speed they open allowing more airflow through the radiator.
Just my observation.
Keep your shroud for a lot of in town driving.
