Cracked E-12 Head

I have a 79' e12 that had the overheating problems as discussed before. Thanks for all of you help! I changed the oil during this process, nad now its a little milky and liquidy. I used 20/50. Is there any way to confirm a cracked head. The best price I have gotten on a replacement is $400. I found an 80' 528i for $500. It is rusty but has leather, new tires, and a rebuilt 3.0 mated to a 5 speed. I only have a 4 speed. Any pitfalls in replacing the motor and tranny. For maybe 100 dollars more I get all those extra parts.

PS: Did the 80's come with a 5 speed? Is it an overdrive or 1:1?
