Math wise, overdrive means your driveshaft is turning 20% faster than your engine. Driving it, it means at 70, instead of your engine buzzing at 3500rpm, it is turning more like 2800rpm. Quieter and more relaxed and using less gas. Close ratio transmissions are better for acceleration or high performance, you are always at the engines peak. They both serve a useful function, but for different things.
