Doors are always a bitch to adjust, however the BMW folks make it a little easier than some other cars I have worked on.
The hinges are tightened up with the door closed. I am not saying it is easy, only easier.
With the inside door panel removed and the window cranked up you will see the hinge bolts inside the door. No real tricks that I know of, just alot of trial and error. I used some wood shims to get the door where I thought I wanted it (when closed) then tighten up and try it out. The door will proabably sag a little and you'll have to repeat the whole process a few times. A drill bit makes a good gauge for checking your gap eveness. Also remember that the catches, stricker plates and other latch type stuff are adjustable too.
The key here is patience. After a while you'll get the hang of it and then it is not so bad.
