Troy is probably correct with his multi-diagnosis: fuel pumps do go bad, but less likely. I lost the relay (the one immediately above the # 1 fuse outside the fuse box which controls the fuel pump. Thought it was a dead pump at first, but wasn't. Replacing the relay and wiring to (positive) battery fixed it. If they're older metal (Hella) relays, may be worth replacing them with the newer plastic Bosch relays. The old metal ones can fail and/or short.
Put up a pic or 2 somewhere and let's have a look at your E12/8.
