i guess how you proceed depends on how fast you want your car back on the road. if you dont mind it being out of service for a while you have alot of options. however, if you need it back and driving quickly, then replacing the head with a good late model unit will be your best bet. from your discription, it sounds like a nice solid car.
if you dont need/ want it to drive quickly, plan on keeping it and your wife is receptive, an engine and trans upgrade would be a good improvement.
i am not so sure the engine you purchased is a good candidate for all the labor/ cost involved in the swap. must be out of a 530i and the head is the same style as the one that cracked on you. by all means keep the five speed and upgrade your car with it. the engine? i dunno...
