My experience follows the clue Eugene gave. The gas tank was leaking at a seam between top and bottom half -- only right after I filled it. Gas smell was very noticeable in the trunk. I chased the smell through all the connections in the trunk, then the filler pipe, and finally noticed a little damp spot on the side of the tank itself. A little breeze will take away most of the gas smell under the car, but it lingers in the trunk.
