It's not a good idea to cut holes for larger speakers in the rear. The "shelf" back there is really an air channel that links the two vents on either side of the car. They pull air out of the car as it moves forward. I think this is why the ventilation system in the car is so good. If you cut the channel and put in larger speakers, you'll block off most of the air channel and the ventilation system won't work as well. I'm trying to think of way to undo the damage I did years ago when I made this mistake. The best I've come up with so far is to cut some pieces from a parts car and weld them in. Unfortunately, I don't know how to weld, so its going to be expensive.
