I don't see how that would help because air wouldn't get out of the system.
: Bill Proud drills a 1/8" in the body of a thermostat then places t-stat with hole at the top of the housing. Says hole is just big enough to allow self-bleeding. I guess he means the part of the stat that doesn't move?
: Haven't tried it, I replaced my screw 10 years ago.
: : Why do the Germans have to over-engineer everything??
: : : In extreme cases it's easier to remove the housing to heat, cool, oil, bang, and repeat process. You might try some decent penetrating oil then tap lightly with hammer on the side while trying to turn. The secret is don't strip the slot head by trying to muscle it off.
: : : Once removed you can replace with newer style hex head type which you will go buy tomorrow.
: : : I will often heat with torch and then try to tap and turn while it cools down.
: : : If you use torch make sure your fuel lines are ok (if still on the car) and ALWAYS have fire extinqisher on hand!
: : : Good luck (patience pays - don't get in a hurry on this job!)

: : : : I could not get the bleed screw on the thermostat cover to turn. Any suggestions?
