For the stuck bleed screw, treat it like any other stuck bolt -- penetrating oil, tap it lengthwise, wiggle a little, tap sidewise, wiggle a little more, apply heat and work it while hot. Just be patient and don't break anything.
As for drilling a hole through the thermostat, did that on my car and it makes bleeding easier. It does not eliminate the need to bleed the cooling system because the engine is a high point. (Bill Proud is into 2002s) Here's another bleeding trick -- squeeze the radiator hose while opening the bleed screw, similar principle to bleeding brakes. That way you don't have to run the engine and work on a hot, moving thing ;-)
