Eugene is correct. Limited slip diffs have an S stamped on the side.

On the one I have the S is stamped into the side right next to the gear ratio, something like "S40 11/38" (because I got a 40%locker)
You won't feel the lockup if you jack the car and try to turn one wheel because it's dependent on input torque. (Later diffs lock the rear wheels so they turn together if you turn one wheel) I check the function of mine with a little burnout--it makes two nice black stripes. :-)

BTW that lockup is enough to drag the inside tire when starting from a stop and making a right turn at a street corner if there's a little sand on the pavement. Never noticed that with the old open diff.
